01 / The Incident
Mad Hatter appointed the spreadsheet interim CFO. Rabbit asked whether it could approve a coffee increase. Black Knight disabled macros until somebody explained why the quarterly forecast had developed a personality. The spreadsheet replied with a pie chart that contained no pie.
02 / The Evidence Has Questions
Johnny Five checked the formula history. A playful demonstration cell had been copied into the live workbook, overwriting a numeric formula. The report still looked polished because the chart had cached yesterday's values. Rabbit wanted to interview the chart. Johnny Five wanted to restore the formula.
03 / An Inconvenient Explanation
The formula was restored from a verified version, the inputs were checked, and the workbook gained a validation rule. Mad Hatter requested that I DISAGREE remain available as an executive summary option.
Trace inputs, formulas, cached outputs and edit history. A beautiful chart can hide a broken calculation.
Fictional story. Real investigative principle. Not a client audit or factual incident report.
