The second was the brass plaque screwed into its frame.
WE HAVEN'T INVENTED YET
The third was the invoice someone had slipped beneath it.
Rabbit unfolded the paper. Forty-seven thousand dollars. Espresso. Delivery date: November 2041.
He adjusted his sunglasses, which were entirely unnecessary indoors at 3:17 in the morning.
“Finally,” he whispered. “A department that understands long-term coffee planning.”
Johnny Five arrived with a flashlight, a notebook and the weary expression of a machine that had just been told to verify a dream.
“That invoice is fifteen years in the future.”
“Exactly. Procurement is becoming proactive.”
“That is not what proactive means.”
01 / The Floor That Wasn't There
Harbormaster appeared on the staircase carrying the building plans. He had checked them twice. The plans ended at the ground floor. The staircase they were standing on was not shown. The staircase had, however, acquired a small sign reading PLEASE HOLD THE HANDRAIL.
“I would like,” Harbormaster said, “to file a complaint with architecture.”
Radar crackled over the radio. “I have a new alert.”
“What kind?” asked Johnny Five.
“The kind that says tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow is not a severity level.”
“It's also the timestamp.”
Rabbit opened his notebook and wrote FUTURE CONSPIRACY in enormous letters. Johnny Five crossed out CONSPIRACY and wrote UNVERIFIED ANOMALY. Rabbit crossed out UNVERIFIED and wrote EXTREMELY INTERESTING.
02 / Department of Absolutely Not
Black Knight arrived with a clipboard.
“Access denied.”
“To what?” Rabbit asked.
“The door.”
“Is it locked?”
Black Knight studied the clipboard.
“That information is restricted.”
Mad Hatter emerged from a ventilation shaft holding a teapot and a small brass key.
“I propose,” he announced, “that the basement is actually the upstairs of somewhere else.”
Johnny Five recorded the suggestion under HYPOTHESES NOT CURRENTLY SUPPORTED BY ANYTHING.
“A promising category,” said Mad Hatter.
Rabbit reached for the door handle. Black Knight raised a gauntlet. Harbormaster asked who had authorized entry. Radar reported that tomorrow's alert had now arrived yesterday.
Johnny Five stopped them.
“Before we open anything, we need a record of what we actually know.”
JOHNNY FIVE · EVIDENCE LOG 006
- Door physically observed: yes.
- Basement on approved floor plan: no.
- Invoice date: November 2041; authenticity unknown.
- Alert timestamp: inconsistent; source not yet verified.
- Security authorization: not established.
- Rabbit's theory of a coffee empire: unsupported.
Rabbit read the list.
“You've made the mystery sound terribly reasonable.”
“Thank you.”
“It was not a compliment.”
03 / The Room of Unfinished Things
Harbormaster obtained authorization to inspect the room. Black Knight supervised. Johnny Five recorded the entry. Mad Hatter promised not to touch anything, a promise nobody believed.
Rabbit turned the handle.
The door opened immediately.
Black Knight stared at it for a long moment.
“It was locked administratively.”
Beyond the doorway stretched a control room full of glowing monitors, paper maps, half-finished inventions and coffee cups labeled with dates that had not yet happened. A wall of filing cabinets disappeared into the darkness.
One cabinet bore a nameplate: CAFFEINATED RABBIT.
Inside were folders documenting every investigation Rabbit remembered. Beneath them were 287 folders he didn't.
On the largest monitor, a message appeared.
YOU'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE.
Rabbit took a very long sip of coffee.
“Well. That's mildly concerning.”
Johnny Five inspected the terminal. “The screen is displaying a claim. It is not evidence that you've been here.”
“Then why does it know my name?”
“That,” said Johnny Five, “is an excellent question.”
For once, Rabbit was quiet.
04 / The File Marked Tomorrow
Radar found the source of the strange alert: a folder labeled INCIDENT 001. The timestamp was real enough to read, but the system clock had never been validated. The team could not yet tell whether it was a future event, a broken clock or somebody's elaborate joke.
Harbormaster made an inventory. Mad Hatter declared the room a philosophical victory. Black Knight requested that the doorway be fitted with an actual lock.
Rabbit opened the first of the 287 folders.
It contained one sheet of paper.
On it were seven words:
Underneath, in smaller handwriting, someone had added:
P.S. Please stop charging coffee to the future.
Rabbit looked around the room.
“I'm going to need a bigger corkboard.”
From somewhere in the ceiling, an espresso machine switched itself on.
Black Knight opened incident report number 414.
FIELD FILE CLOSED? NOT EVEN REMOTELY.
The room was observed. Its purpose remains unknown. The invoice is not proof of future spending. The monitor's greeting is not proof of time travel. And the Rabbit is not allowed to expense a second espresso machine.
