09 / CANONICAL KNOWLEDGE · FICTIONAL FIELD FILE

The File Called Final-Final

Six files declared themselves final. None agreed.

The folder contained FINAL, FINAL-NEW, FINAL-v4, FINAL-REAL and FINAL-FINAL. Rabbit briefly considered a filing-system bonfire.

CHAPTER 01

Five competing truths

Each document offered a slightly different explanation of a past change. File dates conflicted with decision dates. Nobody could show which version matched the actual system.

“The latest file wins?” Rabbit asked. Johnny Five shook his head.

CHAPTER 02

Recover before rebuild

The crew mapped the histories, identified the owner and marked disputed statements. Black Knight declined to delete old versions before their significance was understood. Radar listed the outstanding verification checks.

Harbormaster gave the authoritative record a stable home instead of another festive filename.

CHAPTER 03

A record with a return path

The team preserved evidence, dated decisions and labeled superseded versions. They didn't rewrite uncertain history to make it look neat.

Rabbit named his next notebook NOT FINAL. For once, it was the most trustworthy title in the building.

FIELD FILE CLOSED. QUESTION KEPT OPEN.

Rabbit returns to the surface carrying observations and possible next checks—not unverified conclusions.

THE EVIDENCE CHALLENGE

What would you conclude?

Is the newest filename automatically the source of truth?

No. Authority depends on ownership, approved decisions, evidence and current verification.

The real-world standard stays the same: verify the evidence, label uncertainty and obtain human authorization before changing anything.
